Rash guard or swim shirt: picking the right layer

They look alike on the rack. The fit, the fabric weight and the job they do in the water are different. Here is how to choose.

The one-sentence difference

A rash guard fits close and is built to stay put through actual swimming and board sports. A loose swim shirt is a sun layer for the sand, the playground sprinkler and the walk to the snack bar.

When close fit wins

  • Real swimming: loose fabric drags and rides up with every stroke.
  • Boogie boards and slides: a snug layer stays between skin and surface.
  • Cool water: close fit holds a thin warm layer against the body.

When loose wins

A kid who refuses tight sleeves will wear a loose swim shirt without a fight, and the shirt they actually keep on beats the technically better one balled up in the beach bag. For sandbox days and splash pads, loose is comfortable and does the sun-layer job fine.

Check the rating, not the color

Sun protection comes from the fabric rating printed on the product page, not from how dark the shirt looks. A pale rated shirt outperforms an unrated navy one. Our swim pieces list their rating on every product page, so check the number while you compare.
